After fifteen years in consumer products market research, I took a six year career break after the birth of my second child. I vowed I would never go back to my former field. But after investigating other potential paths that interested me, and thinking hard about what I wanted to get out of paid work, I decided to relaunch as a freelance market research consultant. I knew I wanted to limit my hours but still generate significant income and I realized it would be easiest to do that in an area where I already had expertise. I consider my relaunch a work in progress but, for now, freelance projects provide the best balance of family and paid work.
